Ion Concert Media has undertaken a project to update and re-imagine Disney's classic 1928 cartoon "Steamboat Willie" as a 21st century concert work.
Ion CEO Scott Winters and composer Harrison Collins have taken the lead and plan to have a final product ready for performances starting in late fall 2026.
Among the objectives of the project are a remastered 4k version of the film, a rework of the orchestral score with versions for both concert band and orchestra, and modernized audio fx.
The project also includes the addition of a live foley artist solo part that will have a percussionist perform all the sound effects from the "Turkey in the Straw" sequence on traditional and home made instruments.
"The foley artist will add visual interest and drama to the performance, " said Collins. "There are so many sight gags we can incorporate, from pots and pans to a lion's roar. Audiences will love it."
The project is being funded through a commissioning consortium that is open to any concert bands and orchestras that wish to support the work in return for an exclusive premiere performance.
